Video: Barack Obama @ Working Women Discussion

June 24, 2008

Here’s the video of Sen. Barack Obama speaking at the Working Women Discussion in Albuquerque, New Mexico today.

Barack discussed issues like middle class tax cuts, equal pay and paid leave with a group of working women.

We cant afford an economy where folks keep working harder for less. We cant let the women in our workforce get paid even less for doing the same work. And we cant keep pushing more and more of the burden on to the backs of working parents who are struggling to balance their jobs and their family. Because what binds us together, what makes us one American family, is that we stand up and fight for each other’s dreams, and for the dreams of all of our children.

Behold the Great Seal of the ObamaNation!

June 24, 2008

Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., speaks during a meeting of Democratic Governors at the Chicago History Museum in Chicago Friday, June 20, 2008. A new seal debuted on Obama’s podium Friday, sporting iconography used in the U.S. presidential seal, the blue background, the eagle clutching arrows on left and olive branch on right, but with symbolic differences. Instead of the Latin “E pluribus unum” (Out of many, one), Obama’s says “Vero possumus”, rough Latin for “Yes, we can.” Instead of “Seal of the President of the United States”, Obama’s Web site address is listed. And instead of a shield, Obama’s eagle wears his “O” campaign logo with a rising sun representing hope ahead.

Politico.com and Regnery Publishing mislead the public with claims of a “First Obama attack book”

ContrarianCommentary.com/OrangeStatePress.com are first in the field

Is Regnery pushing “vaporware” to stop Andy Martin’s best-selling blockbuster on Senator Barack Obama?

(NEW YORK)(June 24, 2008) ContrarianCommentary.com charged Tuesday that Politico.com has published an incorrect report claiming that a “first Obama attack book” is being published by a “conservative journalist” and Regnery Publishing.

“Our book goes to press within hours,” says Andy Martin, Executive Editor of ContrarianCommentary.com. “Indeed, we have had reportsunconfirmed to datethat the media are lifting concepts from our own book on a wholesale basis.

“One of the reasons for Barack Obama’s success is that right-wing writers try to smear the senator. We have taken a balanced approached, which we call ‘Just the facts, ma’am’ from Dragnet. We reject as much anti-Obama material as we publish, because much of it is inaccurate and spiteful. We are not hesitant to land tough blows on the good senator, but we strive to hit him with accurate ones.

“Regnery is obviously trying to stop our book by issuing misleading claims and statements. That in itself is a sign they may be coming out with a smear, not a real character study, of Obama.

“Sean Hannity was apparently confused by Regnery’s claims because he described another book using terms that exclusively relate to mine. A search of Regnery’s web site indicates they are issuing ‘vaporware;’ there is nothing there about any Obama book. Mine is the only one in print.

“There is nothing wrong with good, old-fashioned, hardnosed competition in the publishing industry. But distributing disinformation disserves the truth. We have a very solid reputation for strong and independent analysis; ‘Obama: The Man Behind The Mask’ will build on that library of commentary.

“A book on Obama that is going to have impact must argue the case against him carefully, with credibility, not on the basis of the drive-by right-wing hatchet job apparently contemplated by Regnery. That kind of writing will only strengthen, not weaken, Obama.

“The left-wing in America is united on one issue involving myself and Obama: my work has inflicted grievous damage on Obama’s reputation and raised serious questions about the senator’s character, candor and fitness for the presidency. Such unanimity by the left-wing about my writing is the best endorsement any writer could hope to obtain,” Martin remarked.

“I have been falsely accused of being the orchestrator of a vast right-wing smear machine, testimony to the power behind the ContrarianCommentary.com brand name. I dont have any ‘machine.’ There is no secret command and control bunker under Midtown Manhattan.

“Where Obama is concerned, I have only the truth.

“Obviously, Politico.com and Regnery are not trying to match my high standards with their latest remarks.”

Blackwell’s To Launch ‘Clicks And Bricks’ Book Retailing

June 23, 2008
Espresso Book Machine

From The Guardian:

Blackwell’s is to become the first high-street bookseller in the UK to offer print-on-demand books while customers wait. The innovation will be delivered by an “Espresso Book Machine” (EBM), which can print and bind any one of a million titles.

Set to be piloted this autumn in a branch that is yet to be announced, the chain plans eventually to install EBM machines in all 60 of its shops across the UK. The machine can currently print about 40 pages per minute, but a newer model due later this year is expected to double that speed.

My Comment: I am just surprise that it took this long to be offered.

Using Caution with Polling Data

June 23, 2008

The most recent polls suggest that Barack Obama has a substantial double digit lead over John McCain. This is good news, especially when we consider that Barack might be expected to trail McCain at this time given the latter’s stronger name recognition.

However, we have to be careful with polling data especially as there is still about four months to until the polls in November. That’s a long time in the world of campaigning.

You might remember that there was a time last year, when pundits were ready to stick a fork in McCain’s campaign. He was way behind in the polls and was nearly broke. At it was about this time last year, that Barack looked like a young, hopeful guy, but with little chance of beating the ‘inevitable’ Clinton machine. Some polls showed Clinton having an even wider spread than Obama enjoys now against McCain.

Experts know that many more people will vote in the general election as compared to the primaries. The fact that these folks did not bother to vote in the primaries is pretty good evidence they haven’t been paying much attention.

As the general election draws nearer, really in many cases in just the last few weeks, these same people will being to focus on which candidate they want to support. They are typical swing voters. This is a time when polls can change very rapidly day to day.

Much of the effort in the campaign at the present time is in preparation for winning those swing voters over during that crucial end-game period.

RIP George Carlin

June 23, 2008

Aw GODFUCKINGDAMNIT, what a SHIT way to start the week. Of ALL the people I was not looking forward to that one dark day when it came to add them to my DEAD HEROES list, George Carlin was pretty goddamn close to the top. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, I am honored to have seen his live show from the 2nd row back in 1995 at Sunrise Musical Theater. What is amazing really is how George RIPPED the living SHIT out of the “Establishment” yet was accepted by the mainstream! Odd how instances like that happen, yet how many people know about Bill Hicks, Lenny Bruce and folks like that?!
And let’s give it up to George for rejecting the INSANITY that is CHRISTIANITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
“Class Clown” shall ALWAYS be a classic, as is “AM/PM”, “Occupation Foole”, “What Am I Doing In NJ?”, “Jammin’ In NY”, “Back In Town” and “You Are All Diseased”!
Well, I think George’s work stands for itself, so what the fuck is there really for me to say, other than:
SHIT, PISS, FUCK, CUNT, MOTHERFUCKER, COCKSUCKER and TITS!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hail George Carlin!
HAIL SATAN!!!

George Carlin Mourned As Counterculture Hero — Some Ebooks, Videos, And News Links

George Carlin

From Yahoo News:

LOS ANGELES – Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television. Some People Are Stupid. Stuff. People I Can Do Without. George Carlin, who died of heart failure Sunday at 71, leaves behind not only a series of memorable routines, but a legal legacy: His most celebrated monologue, a frantic, informed riff on those infamous seven words, led to a Supreme Court decision on broadcasting offensive language.

The counterculture hero’s jokes also targeted things such as misplaced shame, religious hypocrisy and linguistic quirks why, he once asked, do we drive on a parkway and park on a driveway?

The Game Theory Boom

June 23, 2008

I’m linking to a nice paper [Nicola Giocoli: Three Alternative (?) Stories on the Late 20th-Century Rise of Game Theory] asking about the reasons for the sudden boom in the use of Game Theory in economics in the eighties. His bottom line is Harsanyi’s development of tools for thinking about games of incomplete information, so-called Bayesian games. But he also gives some importance to the following circumstance: The Chicago School completely dominated Antitrust policy in the eighties. I remember in Grad school in the late 70’s the suffocating growth of Panglossian Industrial Organization thinking. This was the stuff that would look at any apparent example of restraint of trade – resale price maintenance, eg – and find that it was rational and efficient. Predatory pricing was irrational and could never happen; the only real entry barriers were put in place by the dead hand of the state. Laissez faire; laissez allez, in short. Economists dissatisfied with this picture – in particular, thinkers associated with Stanford’s Graduate Schoool of Business such as Paul Milgrom and John Roberts – used Harsanyi’s Bayesian techniques to provide rigorous counter-examples to the Chicago conventional wisdom: to show how predation might make sense, how non-state entry barriers – such as building excess capacity, might well succeed, and so on.

Euripides — Ancient Greek Tragedian: Ebooks And Resource Links

June 23, 2008
Euripides

From Wikipedia:

Euripides was the last of the three great tragedians of classical Athens (the other two being Aeschylus and Sophocles).

Euripides is known primarily for having reshaped the formal structure of traditional Attic tragedy by showing strong women characters and intelligent slaves, and by satirizing many heroes of Greek mythology. His plays seem modern by comparison with those of his contemporaries, focusing on the inner lives and motives of his characters in a way previously unknown to Greek audiences.
