Barack Obama ready for Iran talks

January 27, 2009

President Barack Obama said he is willing to begin talks with Iran — a view echoed by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Obama said that if Iran were willing to “unclench its fist” it would find an “extended hand” from the United States.

Obama’s Middle East envoy, former Senator George Mitchell, is now touring the region.

Overheard– Hillary: "The Clintons don’t forget"

January 25, 2009

By GottaLaff

In the mood for some extra crunchy Hillary gossip?

Megan Carpentier:

Well, one of our eagle-eyed sources… was able to get within earshot just in time to hear Clinton warn Cornyn, “The Clintons don’t forget.” One day later, Cornyn’s objections to Clinton’s confirmation magically disappeared and the man who had set the roll call vote in motion voted in favor of confirming Clinton. Now let’s see how she handles Hamid Karzai. […]

UPDATE: Unofficial Cornyn camp response: “Are you kidding?”

A non-denial denial, mayhaps?

So much heresay, so little time.

New York State Gov. David Paterson complained that Caroline Kennedy turned “nasty” as he was about to pick a replacement for Hillary Clinton’s Senate seat, the New York Post reveals. Patterson, who chose Kirsten Gillibrand on Friday, grumbled to friends at a party that Kennedy “disrespected” him with the way she pulled out of the running, and didn’t return phone calls from him for hours.
From Stopthepresses; Gov. your not seeing half the things the nasty liberals do. We could show you a lot more. Check out the nasty liberal hippy chick at, AFLAC DUCK CALLS FOR BARACK OBAMA’S ARREST?

Obama Foreign Policy to Include "America Houses"

January 24, 2009

Here’s a great post from the ladies at “Whirled View” detailing possible foreign policy approaches of the new Administration. One of the initiatives discussed by Clinton will involve more “America Houses” overseas, particularly in the Arab World.

MSNBC reporting Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand to replace Hillary

January 23, 2009

Gillibrand is considered a highly talented politician and a rising political star, but her appointment apparently would not sit well with many New York liberals and progressives; two New Yorkers are already openly talking about a primary challenge.

So far, no fewer than two of Gillibrand’s fellow Democrats and a group of progressive advocates are threatening to primary the upstate congresswoman, who routinely touts her Blue Dog status, if she is elevated to the Senate by Gov. David Paterson.

Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, a staunch gun control advocate who was propelled into politics by the 1993 LIRR massacre in which her husband was killed, told City Room she is “very upset” by the idea that “a senator representing the NRA for New York” and would be willing to challenge Gillibrand if no one else does.

Gillibrand was endorsed by the NRA in 2008.

UPDATE- Keith says just now that all potential Senators are invited to the announcement tomorrow, but all other rumours point to Gillibrand.

Here is the video of President Obama’s speech at the State Department. That would be the very same one that got the “rousing ovation” that brought the crowd to its feet.

He’s not so much a breath of fresh air as a hurricane. Hurricane Barack.

Secretary of State Clinton and V.P. Biden have just addressed the State Department. President Obama is there, and the following additions to Team Obama are being announced:

George Mitchell has just been officially named Middle East Envoy by Secretary of State Clinton, and he just said there is no conflict that cannot be resolved.

Ambassador Richard Holbrooke is now being announced as Special Envoy to Pakistan and Afghanistan.

President Obama is about to speak and is getting a standing O. Liveblogging:

He’s paying tribute to the State Department. “I have given you an early gift: Hillary Clinton.”

She has my full confidence. Thanks the Senate for the quick confirmation. The Foreign Service will be critical. America’s strength comes from our enduring values… This [new] era has to begin now.

He’s discussing his new executive orders. Big applause for the “we do not torture” line. Gitmo’s closure, and trying terrorism suspects… We will be unyielding in our country’s security… We need a durable framework… The orders sent an unmistakable signal that our actions will be as just as our cause… America’s moral example must be the bedrock of our leadership…

Progress will not come quickly or easily, nor can we right every wrong in the world. But we can use our power to protect our people and principled ideals.

I’m calling on your hard work… My policy is to seek lasting peace… [He’s discussing Mitchell’s resume] There is a sense of urgency…. He’ll be going to the regioin a.s.a.p…

America is committed to Israel’s security… Hamas has attacked Israeli citizens… Hamas must meet clear conditions [lists them].

[Sympathetic words for Palestinians]

I’ll stop here, and we’ll put up the video as soon as we find it.

In one day, President Obama has begun to tackle the overwhelming problems in places that Bush couldn’t even spell.
