Biden apologizes to Roberts for oath of office joke

January 28, 2009

By GottaLaff

Why was an apology really necessary? Chief Justice Roberts blew it, and V.P. Biden had some fun with it. My guess: The vice president’s boss made him do it:

An aide to Vice President Joe Biden tells CNN he called Chief Justice John Roberts last week to apologize for a light-hearted remark he made over the flubbed Inauguration Day oath of office. […]

Several staffers reacted to the comment with groans and laughter, though President Obama, standing next to Biden, did not crack a smile.

An aide to the vice president said Tuesday the two men spoke privately after that comment. They spoke and had a good conversation, said the aide, who declined to give further details.

"Impeach John Roberts"

Craig Crawford isn’t usually this openly passionate from what I’ve seen, so he must be awfully upset about this:

There is simply no excuse for United States Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts bungling the presidential oath of office to such an extent that Barack Obama might need to do it again, at least in private, to ensure the legality of his inauguration.

Roberts should be impeached and removed from office for this unforgivable error. The Constitution requires certain language for a presidential oath of office. Roberts blew it. And if he doesn’t understand such things he should be fired for misfeasance of the first order.

Here’s the latest, in case you missed it:

White House Counsel Greg Craig released this statement:

“We believe that the oath of office was administered effectively and that the President was sworn in appropriately yesterday. But the oath appears in the Constitution itself. And out of an abundance of caution, because there was one word out of sequence, Chief Justice Roberts administered the oath a second time.”

The pool report has great details of how it took place:

At 7:35 pm, Roberts administered the oath of office again to Obama in the map room.

“We decided it was so much fun…” Obama joked while sitting on a couch.

Obama stood and walked over to make small talk with pool as Roberts donned his black robe.

“Are you ready to take the oath?” Roberts asked.

I am, and we’re going to do it very slowly,” Obama replied.

Oath took 25 seconds. After a flawless recitation, Roberts smiled and said, “Congratulations, again.”

Obama said, “Thank you, sir.”

Smattering of applause.

All right.” Obama said. “The bad news for the pool is there’s 12 more balls.”

One: President Obama has a great sense of humor.

Two: President Obama has stamina. Now come on… Get your minds out of the gutter. Besides, how would I even know that?

No, no, I’m talking about all those balls. … … …

What did I just say about getting your minds out of the gutter? Go to your respective rooms. Man, I can’t take you guys anywhere.

VIDEO– Biden: "My memory isn’t as good as Chief Justice Roberts’"

Here is the video that I referred to earlier. Priceless.

In case you missed it: Chief Justice slipped up

UPDATE:

On CNN, Wolf Blitzer said, “John Roberts had one job to do today and he sort of screwed up.” Jeffrey Toobin replied, “I almost fell out of my chair.

I saw it, and Paddy saw it… I’m sure you all saw it. But let’s review:

For an Inauguration so smoothly choreographed, the flubbing of the oath of office by Chief Justice John Roberts was particularly striking. Roberts slightly misspoke the oath, which then tripped up Obama.

Here it is:

The oath is contained in the Constitution: “I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

But when Roberts swore in Obama, he flipped some of the words, saying: “I will execute the office of president to the United States faithfully.”

Here’s the transcript:

ROBERTS: Are you prepared to take the oath, Senator?

OBAMA: I am.

ROBERTS: I, Barack Hussein Obama…

OBAMA: I, Barack…

ROBERTS: … do solemnly swear…

OBAMA: I, Barack Hussein Obama, do solemnly swear…

ROBERTS: … that I will execute the office of president to the United States faithfully…

OBAMA: … that I will execute…

ROBERTS: … faithfully the office of president of the United States…

OBAMA: … the office of president of the United States faithfully…

ROBERTS: … and will to the best of my ability…

OBAMA: … and will to the best of my ability…

ROBERTS: … preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.

OBAMA: … preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.

ROBERTS: So help you God?

OBAMA: So help me God.

ROBERTS: Congratulations, Mr. President.
